When our founder, Late Shri Siram Surya Narayana Murthy, opened Visalandhra General Stores in Amalapuram in 1954, educational publishing in Andhra Pradesh was in its nascent stages. The post-independence era was witnessing a surge in literacy initiatives, and the demand for quality educational materials in regional languages was growing rapidly. Seven decades later, as we reflect on this incredible journey, the transformation has been nothing short of remarkable.
The Early Days: 1954-1970
In the 1950s, most educational materials were either imported from other states or limited to English-medium content. Recognizing the need for Telugu-medium study materials, our founder began printing S.S.L.C. guides in both Telugu and English. This was revolutionary at the time—students from rural areas finally had access to affordable, comprehensive study materials in their mother tongue.
The response was overwhelming. Teachers and students across East Godavari district embraced these guides, which were not just translations but thoughtfully adapted to the local context and learning styles. This early success taught us a valuable lesson that continues to guide VGS Publishers today: education is most effective when it speaks the learner’s language, both literally and culturally.
Expansion and Diversification: 1970-1990
The 1970s marked a period of significant expansion for VGS Publishers. As the business grew, we opened our Vijayawada office in 1972, strategically positioning ourselves to serve the broader united Andhra Pradesh market. This decade also saw us diversifying beyond academic guides into devotional literature, responding to the deep spiritual traditions of our region.
The 1980s brought technological changes to the printing industry. We invested in modern offset printing machines, replacing the older letterpress technology. This upgrade allowed us to produce books faster, in larger quantities, and with better quality. Color printing became more accessible, transforming how we designed children’s books and illustrated educational materials.
During this period, we also began our long-standing collaboration with government educational bodies. Printing textbooks for government schools became a significant part of our business, allowing us to contribute directly to the state’s literacy mission.
The Digital Revolution: 1990-2010
The advent of computers and desktop publishing in the 1990s revolutionized our industry. We were among the early adopters of digital typesetting, particularly important for handling complex Telugu script. This technology dramatically reduced production times and improved accuracy.
The establishment of new universities and technical institutions in Andhra Pradesh during this era created demand for specialized educational content. We expanded our catalog to include engineering textbooks, pharmacy materials, and diploma course books, working closely with SBTET and various universities to ensure content accuracy and curriculum alignment.
This period also saw the rise of competitive examinations as career pathways diversified. VGS Publishers responded by developing comprehensive preparation materials for civil services, banking, and state-level examinations—a segment that remains robust today.
The Modern Era: 2010-Present
Today’s educational publishing landscape is dramatically different from the one we entered in 1954. Digital learning resources, online education platforms, and e-books coexist with traditional printed materials. Rather than viewing these as threats, we’ve embraced them as opportunities.
Our 1,20,000 sq ft facility at Ambapuram represents the culmination of technological advancement and traditional craftsmanship. We now employ computer-to-plate technology, automated binding systems, and quality control processes that ensure every book meets exacting standards. Yet, the human touch remains central—our team of editors, designers, and production experts bring decades of collective experience to each project.
The COVID-19 pandemic accelerated changes in education delivery, but it also reinforced the enduring value of printed books. Students and teachers rediscovered the benefits of physical textbooks—no screen fatigue, no connectivity issues, better retention, and the tactile satisfaction of turning pages.
Lessons from Seven Decades
Looking back, several principles have remained constant throughout our journey:
Quality Never Goes Out of Style: Whether in 1954 or 2025, readers recognize and appreciate quality content, clear presentation, and durable construction.
Local Knowledge Matters: Understanding the specific needs of Andhra Pradesh and Telangana’s educational ecosystem—from curriculum requirements to linguistic preferences—has been our competitive advantage.
Relationships Build Businesses: The trust we’ve built with educators, institutions, and readers over decades cannot be replicated through marketing alone.
Adaptation is Essential: From letterpress to digital printing, from single-language to bilingual publications, our willingness to evolve has ensured our survival and growth.
Service Beyond Sales: Our commitment to supporting education extends beyond selling books—it’s about being partners in the learning journey.
Looking Ahead
As we move forward, VGS Publishers remains committed to innovation while honoring our heritage. We’re exploring sustainable printing practices, expanding our digital offerings, and continually updating our content to reflect contemporary educational needs.
The educational publishing industry in Andhra Pradesh and Telangana continues to evolve, shaped by policy changes, technological advances, and changing student needs. We’re excited to be part of this evolution, carrying forward the vision of our founder while embracing the opportunities of tomorrow.
One thing is certain: as long as there are learners seeking knowledge and educators committed to teaching, there will be a place for quality educational publishing. And VGS Publishers will be there, as we have been for the past seventy years.
